Energy efficiency

The European Climate Neutrality Observatory (ECNO) was launched in 2023, with the aim to help the European Union achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The observatory operates by providing annual checks on real-life progress of various economic sectors and targeted cross-cutting areas.

What did last year’s publication say about the EU’s journey to become climate neutral? This report showed positive movement in a number of sectors and cross-cutting areas, but the current rate of change does not align with the EU’s climate neutrality by 2050 target.

Indeed, sectoral progress across six key areas is either in the wrong direction (carbon dioxide removal), far too slow (agrifood, industry, mobility, buildings) or too slow (electricity).

The ECNO has reported that efforts on emissions from food processing, transport and packaging (in the agrifood sector) is considered far too slow.

The AENEAM project is therefore a step in the right direction, aiming to improve energy efficiency and seeking a 50% increased rate of implementation of energy efficiency-related measures.
