In December of 2023, a joint declaration on energy efficiency financing was signed by the Commission and EU countries, a first step towards establishing the European Energy Efficiency Financing Coalition. The goal of this Coalition is to strengthen the work on the Energy Efficiency Financial Institutions Group, and to help step up investments in energy efficiency.

The first General Assembly of the Coalition was held on the 20th of May, hosted by the EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing. Founding members of the Financing Coalition (the European Commission, EU countries and leading financial institutions) confirmed their commitment in the mobilisation of “private capital for energy efficiency investments” at the General Assembly.

During this assembly, members endorsed a work programme for the first year of activities, defining their scope of action, mandate, and specific programme.

The Coalition will develop a platform targeting EU countries, financial institutions and the Commission, in the aims of better collaborating on energy efficiency financing. The Coalition seeks to create a more favourable market environment for energy efficiency investments, helping to scale up private financing in energy efficiency. This expert platform will help support the Coalition’s scope of action through the provision of technical input. One of the key focus areas of the platform will be enterprises, notably SMEs.
